Aspect patterns in astrology
When you look at a circular graphical astrology chart, there are often colorful lines drawn inside the circle. They represent different aspects or relations between planets that were present at the moment depicted in the chart. In some charts, there are only a few lines, while in others there are a dozen; their quantity doesn’t make a chart better or worse, just different. Yet sometimes they can form interesting symmetrical shapes that connect distant parts of the chart into visible patterns. These are aspect patterns, and they can take different forms such as triangles, squares, rectangles, or even stars. Each pattern has a different meaning behind it, and their presence can quickly tell us how planets in the sky are coming together to create a new quality of energy.
How kite aspect pattern is created
One of the well-studied aspect patterns is the kite, which consists of an equilateral triangle created by 3 trine aspects with one diameter (opposition) starting at the apex of the triangle, with the end of the diameter creating two sextiles with the remaining apexes. Together, they create a kite.
To create a kite in the astrological chart, at least 4 planets need to be involved. Three of them need to create a triangle, also known as a grand trine, which is an aspect pattern of its own, with the fourth planet creating an opposition to one of those 3. In the above example, the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter are creating a grand trine, while Mars is opposing Jupiter and completing the kite.
Meaning of kite in the sky
A Kite consists of a grand trine and an opposition. The Grand Trine represents great potential held by three planets working together harmoniously across the sky. It provides ease, talent, and opportunities, but lacks direction as it is perfect by itself and has no need to use its power. This is where the opposition comes in. Opposition, by its nature, represents a challenge, some kind of discomfort that requires attention and action. The potential of the Grand Trine gets activated by the opposition and is used to resolve the problem at hand.
Details about what kind of talents are involved and what kind of discomfort they are trying to resolve depend on what planets are involved in a kite, and what signs and houses they are located in. We can see how they work together in practice by using an example of an interesting aspect pattern forming in the sky in the 2nd half of 2024.
Parade of kites in 2024-2027
Since Pluto reentered the sign of Capricorn at the beginning of September, it created a sextile with Neptune and a trine with Uranus. This setup is an aspect pattern of its own known as a minor triangle, but what is important for us now is that this setup is just one planet short of a kite. This means that every time a planet enters the last degrees of Virgo, it will be creating a kite together with all three outer planets. This will give us two kites this month and four kites next year, not counting the monthly kites created by the moon. Furthermore, the outer planets are going to hold this pattern until 2027 and then slowly move away over the course of the next few years. Altogether, this gives us at least 14 kites to watch, understand, and use in the upcoming years.
Kites in September ‘24
This month, kites will be created by the Sun forming an exact opposition with Neptune on the 21st of September, and later Mercury forming the same aspect on the 25th of September. Let’s look in detail at the meaning of those patterns.
Kite, including the Sun in Virgo, holds the potential of all earthly signs, giving us the ability to see our ideas in great detail and understand how they can serve others (Sun in Virgo). It fuels those ideas with the primal urge to achieve whatever we have in mind and overcome every obstacle by transforming whatever needs to be changed (Pluto in Capricorn), which is also aided by unexpected instant moments of revolution in quite rigid, basic, and simple areas that are not likely to change in any other situation (Uranus in Taurus). This field of potential gets redirected towards creating a new idea that will guide us and give meaning to our life (Neptune in Pisces). Yet, this idea is going to be uncomfortably foreign and hard to grasp for the detail-driven Sun in Virgo. This is where Pluto and Uranus come in to create the space needed to accommodate the Neptunian dream.
For comparison, let's check how our kite will fly when Mercury completes the circuit. For starters, Mercury in Virgo is super powerful; it gives us a clear mind, ease of communication, talent for doing things right on the first try by paying attention to details. It gets supercharged by Pluto, giving it even more power and motivation from the depths, while Uranus empowers its connection with technology, rapid movement, and bright ideas. So now we have a lot of potential working quite nicely together. Then Neptune enters the mix, showing the whole bunch the dream it has, the possibilities looming just behind the horizon, showing issues that may be hard to understand but easy to feel, and getting rid of borders that hold everything in place. How is the potential of the Great Trine going to accommodate this energy? Mercury is going to constantly shape it, cut it, and put it into boxes in order to create a practical use for the great ideas of Neptune. Uranus is going to come up with new ways of structuring the world, new technology, new materials that will be able to carry the Neptunian dream into reality, and Pluto is going to use this dream to redistribute power as it feels right.
Comparing both, we can see that Sun-kite works more on the level of ideas, motivations, and worldview, while Mercury-kite seeks more practical ways of using the energy.
What’s important is that these 2 kites are the last ones that are going to happen in earth signs, as next year all outer planets are going to move into air and fire signs. The Grand Trine is going to move into Air, activating intellect, society, future, technology, and justice, while Neptune, after entering the fiery Aries, is going to dream about the meaning of the individual.

How to work with a kite
If you want to observe the influence of upcoming kites in your life, I highly recommend checking in which whole sign houses this kite will be happening and then journaling about how ongoing changes brought by Pluto and Uranus are supporting the integration of Neptune's dream into the area of life represented by the apex planet. By knowing when those aspects will culminate, you can plan the best times to bring change in your life and start new endeavors, as any project, relationship, or event started around the time of the kite will have it in its “birth chart” and can be greatly enhanced by kite energy.
If you need help decoding what those kites bring for you personally, it may be a good idea to book a reading with the purpose of digging deeper into the influence that the kite will have on your personal chart.
